Teaching "AI Perception Challenge" to Explorer mode (ages 5–7)

Hook & Warm-Up

Gather students somewhere they can see you and, ideally, a shared screen. Say it with real excitement — this is a game, and the energy you bring sets the tone:

"You know how A.I. sees, hears, and reads! Now let's play a game! 🏆 Can you guess which type of A.I. sense each one uses?"

Hold up three fingers as you say each word, one per finger: "AI can see 👁️. AI can hear 👂. AI can read 📖." Ask the whole class to copy the three finger-and-word actions with you, out loud, twice through. This is the entire vocabulary for the lesson — resist adding more words. Then say:

"Today we're going to be AI detectives. I'll show you something a computer or a phone can do, and you tell me: is it using its eyes, its ears, or its reading? Sometimes it's more than one — that's the tricky part!"

If your class has done the earlier lessons in this world, ask them to remind you: "What did we learn AI uses to see?" (a camera). "To hear?" (a microphone). "To read?" (it turns words into numbers). You're not testing memory here — you're reactivating three ideas they already have so today's game has something to hook onto.

Keep the warm-up short and physical — this age group learns the sorting rule through their bodies before they can explain it in words. A good closing line before moving into the activity: "Every single thing I show you today uses at least one of these three. Your job is just to point to the right one — or both hands up if it's more than one!" Model the "both hands up" gesture yourself once so nobody is confused when the tricky examples show up later.

Main Activity

Run this as a whole-group call-and-response game before handing devices out. For each example below, say the name and a one-line description, then ask the class to shout "EYES!", "EARS!", or "READING!" (or all three, hands up, if it's more than one). Reveal the answer with the matching gesture — point to your eyes, cup your ears, or mime opening a book.

Round 1 — Eyes (Vision). "A photo app that puts bunny ears or sparkles on your face" — Eyes! It looks at your face in the picture to find where your eyes and nose are, so it knows where to put the sparkles. "A store where you just walk out and it charges you automatically, no cash register" — Eyes! Cameras watch what you pick up off the shelf. "A doctor app that looks at a photo of skin and helps spot something that needs a closer look" — Eyes!

Round 2 — Ears (Hearing). "You say 'Hey Siri' or 'OK Google' and it answers you" — Ears! "A computer that can make up a brand new song after listening to millions of other songs" — Ears! "Someone calls a store's help line, and a computer writes down everything they say while they talk" — Ears!

Round 3 — Reading. "You type a question to a chatbot and it writes an answer back" — Reading! "An app that reads a thousand reviews of a toy and tells you 'most people liked it'" — Reading! "A website that groups news stories about the same thing together" — Reading!

Now play the tricky round — the whole point of the lesson. "A smart speaker that hears your question, figures out what you meant, and answers you out loud." Let them argue for a second, then reveal: Ears AND reading, both together! Say plainly: "Lots of the smartest AI helpers use more than one sense at the same time — that's what makes them feel so smart."

Expect some disagreement in the room during this tricky round, and that's the goal, not a problem to fix quickly. A typical exchange sounds like this: Teacher: "A smart speaker hears your question AND figures out what you meant. Which sense is that?" Student A: "Ears, because it's listening!" Student B: "But it also has to know what the words mean, so that's reading too!" Teacher: "You're both right — that's exactly why we said hands up for BOTH if it's more than one sense. Let's do that now." Let both children feel correct rather than declaring a single winner — the point of the round is that two answers can both be true at once, which is a new and slightly uncomfortable idea for this age group and is worth sitting with for a moment.

If devices are available, let students open the lesson and play the matching activity themselves, then the simple sorting game where they decide if a picture — like a face filter versus a plain picture frame, or a voice assistant versus a megaphone — is "AI" or "just a regular thing." Circulate and ask each child to say out loud which sense their example uses as they sort it.

If a device isn't available for every child, turn the sorting game into a floor activity instead. Lay out (or tape to the floor) two large paper signs, one that says "AI" with a robot sticker and one that says "just a regular thing" with a plain object sticker. Call out pairs one at a time and have children physically walk to stand under the correct sign: "A face filter that puts sparkles on your cheeks" (AI) versus "A picture frame on grandma's shelf" (not AI). "A voice assistant that answers when you talk to it" (AI) versus "A megaphone that just makes your voice louder" (not AI). "A chatbot that writes an answer back to you" (AI) versus "A printed book" (not AI). After each pair, ask one child on the "AI" side to explain, in one sentence, which sense (eyes, ears, or reading) their example used — this is the part that actually teaches the lesson, not just the sorting itself.

Watch for the most common mistake at this age: assuming anything with a screen or a button is automatically "AI." A calculator, a TV remote, and a digital picture frame all have buttons or screens but don't use eyes, ears, or reading to figure anything out — they just do the one thing they're built to do, the same way every time. Naming a couple of these "screen but not AI" examples out loud helps prevent that mix-up from sticking.

Sample exchange to model this distinction: Teacher: "Here's a calculator. It has buttons and a little screen. Does it use AI eyes, ears, or reading?" Student: "Um... eyes? It has a screen." Teacher: "Good guess, but let's check — does it look at a picture? Does it listen to your voice? Does it read words?" Student: "No... it just does the math when you press the buttons." Teacher: "Exactly! It's a great tool, but it doesn't use any of our three AI senses — it just presses the same math every single time, no matter what. That's the difference we're hunting for today."

Filters on photos use...
AI eyes (vision)! A filter has to find your face in the picture — where your eyes, nose, and mouth are — before it can put a funny sticker or sparkle in the right spot. That's a job for AI vision, not ears or reading.
Siri understanding your voice uses...
AI ears (hearing)! Before Siri can do anything, it has to listen to the sound of your voice and figure out what words you said. That's hearing, not seeing or reading.
Spam filters use...
AI reading! A spam filter looks at the words inside an email — not a picture, not a sound — to decide if it's junk mail. Reading words is exactly what AI reading means.
Smart assistants use...
All of them together! A smart assistant listens with ears, figures out what you meant with reading skills, and sometimes even looks things up. This is the big idea of the whole lesson — the smartest helpers usually use more than one sense.

If a child answers a quiz question incorrectly, avoid the word "wrong" entirely — use Pixel's own style of gentle redirection: "Not yet — let's look again. What did the example actually do first: did it look at a picture, or did it listen to a sound?" Walking back to the concrete sensory verb (look, listen, read) almost always gets a child to the right answer faster than repeating the category names.

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with: "Today you were AI detectives! You figured out when a computer is using its eyes, its ears, its reading — or all three at once. The next time you talk to a smart speaker or use a photo filter, see if you can guess which senses it's using!" If your class earned the "Perception Pro" badge inside the app, take a moment to celebrate it out loud — this age group responds strongly to naming the achievement, and it reinforces that today's game was the whole point of the last several lessons, not a random detour.

Extension activity (10–15 minutes): Give each child a small piece of paper folded into three sections labeled with a simple eye, ear, and book drawing. Walk around the room (or have them think of things at home) and have them draw or write one example under each heading — one thing that uses AI eyes, one that uses AI ears, and one that uses AI reading. For an extra challenge, ask if anyone can draw one thing that belongs under two headings at once, and have them explain why to a partner.

If you have more time to fill, follow the drawing activity with a short "show and tell" circle: each child holds up their paper and says one sentence, like "My picture uses AI ears because it listens to music." Keep corrections gentle and curious rather than "wrong" — if a child mislabels something, ask "what do you think it's looking at, or listening to, or reading?" and let them work toward the right answer themselves. For a calmer alternative to show-and-tell, have children trade papers with a neighbor and guess which sense the other child's drawing uses before checking the label — this keeps the whole class engaged rather than only the child currently presenting.
