This lesson runs about 5–10 minutes inside the app for Explorer age, so plan on the surrounding conversation — the hook, the pauses during the hunt, and the discussion — to make up most of your actual class time. That's by design: at this age, the talking and pretend-play around the screen is where the real learning happens, not the screen time itself.
Gather students on the rug or have them turn to face you. Use a big, playful "detective" voice — this is a game, not a quiz.
Teacher: "Let's play DETECTIVE! 🔍 Put on your imaginary detective hat — everybody, pretend to put one on right now." (Pause, let them mime putting on a hat. Do it yourself too.) "Good! Your mission today: find all the smart helpers hiding in a house! Some things in a house are super smart — they can listen, or learn what you like. Other things are just... things. A spoon doesn't get smarter no matter how many times you use it! Are you ready to go room by room and find the smart helpers?"
Let students answer out loud ("Yes!"). Ask one warm-up question before opening the app: "Can anyone tell me one thing in YOUR house that feels like it listens to you, or knows things about you?" Take two or three answers — phones, TVs, and speakers usually come up. Don't correct anyone yet; just say "ooh, good guess, let's find out!" This keeps the tone exploratory rather than right/wrong.
Then open the lesson together (whole class on a shared screen, or each student on their own device) and let the hook play.
A quick management tip for this age band: keep the "detective" framing going the whole lesson, not just in the opening line. Explorer students respond much better to "Detective, what do you see?" than to "Can you tell me the answer?" — the pretend-play makes it feel like a game they're winning, not a test they might fail, which matters a great deal for a group this age that hasn't yet built up confidence around getting things "wrong."
The lesson walks through three rooms, each with four objects. For Explorer age, don't rush through all twelve — slow down, say each object's name out loud, and let students guess "smart helper" or "just a thing" before the app reveals the answer. A simple physical gesture works well here: thumbs up for "smart helper," flat hand for "just a thing." Keep your own energy high through all three rooms — Explorer students take their cue for how exciting something is from your tone of voice more than from the content itself, so treat the reveal of each object like a real discovery every time, even the fourth time you've done it today.
Kitchen 🍳 — Start by pointing at the Smart Speaker on screen. Teacher: "Here's our first clue — a smart speaker! Detectives, thumbs up or flat hand: is this a smart helper?" Let students vote with their hands before revealing. Then: "You got it — a smart speaker listens to your voice and plays your favorite song! That's a smart helper." Next, the Toaster: "How about this one?" (many students will vote thumbs up because it's electric — that's fine, it's a good teaching moment). "Actually, this one's just a thing! A toaster always does the exact same job: heat up bread. It doesn't know your favorite setting — YOU turn the dial every time." Then Smart Fridge (smart helper — "some fridges can tell what food is inside, all by themselves!") and Spoon (just a thing — "a spoon is a spoon, it never changes, no matter how many times you use it").
Living Room 🛋️ — Smart TV (smart helper — "it learns what shows you like and shows you more like them!"). Game Console (smart helper — this one usually gets surprised gasps: "Wait, really? Yes! Some games have characters that react to what YOU do — that's a smart helper too, even though it doesn't talk to you like a speaker does"). Couch (just a thing — "comfy, but it can't think — it just holds you up"). Power Strip (just a thing — "it just shares electricity, kind of like how one water hose can fill up two cups").
Bedroom 🛏️ — Smartwatch (smart helper — "it can tell if you're walking, running, or sleeping, just by feeling how you move!"). Bed (just a thing — "a bed doesn't know if you're dreaming — YOU do the dreaming, not the mattress"). Phone Camera (smart helper — "it finds your face and makes your picture look good, all by itself, before you even press the button!"). Desk Lamp (just a thing — "on, off, on, off — that's the whole job, forever").
After each room, pause and ask: "Which smart helper in this room surprised you?" Expect answers like "the game one!" or "I didn't know the camera was smart!" — this keeps it a conversation, not a lecture. If a student pushes back ("but my toaster IS smart, it has buttons!"), respond gently with the age-mode language: "Not quite — buttons just tell it how long to toast, it doesn't learn anything new. Good thinking, though! Let's keep hunting." Never tell a student their guess was "wrong" — say "not yet" or "almost, let's look closer" and move on. If the whole class seems stuck on one object, it's fine to just tell them the answer warmly rather than dragging out the guessing.
When the app reaches its summary, read it aloud together: "AI is everywhere in your home! Smart speakers listen, smart TVs learn what you like, and phones recognize your face. But lots of things like chairs and spoons don't need AI at all!" Ask the class to give a big cheer for finishing the hunt.
After the three rooms, the app moves into a short solo practice round where each student sorts eight of the same objects (smart speaker, toaster, smart TV, couch, smartwatch, power strip, game console, desk lamp) on their own screen, without you calling out the answer first. This is the moment to go quiet and let them work — walk around the room and give a thumbs-up or a quiet "nice thinking" to students who are working through it, rather than telling anyone the answer. If a student gets stuck, ask "does it learn, or does it always do the same thing?" instead of just pointing at the right one.
Keep this part short and conversational — five minutes is plenty. The goal is to hear students put the idea into their own words, not to reach a "correct" group answer on every question.
Close with praise for their detective work: "You found so many smart helpers today! You're all real AI detectives now. Tomorrow, keep your detective eyes open — you never know where a smart helper is hiding."
Extension activity (fills the rest of the period): Turn the classroom into a giant version of the hunt. Before class, write or draw 8–10 household objects on separate index cards (mix real smart-helper examples from the lesson with plain objects — a book, a pillow, a bike). Tape two big signs on opposite walls: "Smart Helper 🔍" and "Just a Thing." One at a time, call a student up, show them a card, and have them run it to the correct wall while the rest of the class chants "smart helper!" or "just a thing!" together. Finish by counting how many landed on each wall, and ask the class which one surprised them most.
Good card ideas beyond the lesson's own twelve objects: a karaoke machine, a rice cooker, a jeepney, a calculator, a flashlight, a tablet with a drawing app, an electric fan, a walkie-talkie. Mix in a couple of genuinely tricky ones on purpose — a rice cooker with a "smart" setting that keeps rice warm, for instance, is a good one to let the class debate rather than resolve quickly, since even adults disagree about where the line sits for borderline "smart" appliances. If a card sparks real disagreement, that's a sign the lesson worked: the goal was never to memorize twelve specific objects, it was to build a test students can apply to anything new.
If you're short on prep time, a simpler version works too: instead of index cards, just call out object names one at a time and have the whole class vote with thumbs up or flat hand, the same way you did during the app's hunt. It won't fill quite as much time, but it keeps the game going without any materials at all — useful on a day when the lesson runs a little short and you need five more minutes before the bell.
