Teaching "Generative AI" to Builder mode (ages 8–10)

Hook & Warm-Up

Read the app's hook line to the class as an opener — Builder mode students are old enough to have heard some of these tool names already, so let that recognition do the work:

"ChatGPT writes essays. DALL-E creates art. Suno makes music. How can AI CREATE new things? Let's explore generative AI!"

Ask a quick show of hands: "Who has used, or seen someone use, ChatGPT? DALL-E or a picture-making AI? Anything that writes song lyrics?" Whatever the answers, follow up with the real warm-up question: "If you ask one of these to make you a picture of a dragon eating spaghetti — a picture that's never existed before — where does it actually come from? It's not looking that exact picture up online, because it doesn't exist yet. So what IS it doing?" Collect two or three guesses on the board without confirming or correcting them. Tell students you'll test their guesses against what the lesson actually says, and come back to this list at the end.

Write the word "generative" on the board and ask what it sounds like it should mean. Most Builder-age students can connect it to "generate" — to make or produce. Contrast it with earlier World 3 lessons: "Before this, we learned about AI that sorts things and predicts things — is this a cat or a dog, will I like this video. Today's AI is different: it doesn't sort something that already exists, it makes something that didn't exist a second ago. Keep that difference in mind as we go."

Main Activity

This lesson unlocks the "Creator's Mind ✨" badge — mention that up front, it's genuine motivation at this age. Work through the app's three scenes, translating each card into the "how it actually works" explanation, one notch more technical than Explorer but still jargon-light.

Scene 1 — How It Creates ✨:

Scene 2 — Strengths 💪: Speed (a full essay in seconds, an image in minutes, a song in moments), Ideas (combining concepts in unusual ways — "astronaut riding a horse on Mars, painted like a watercolor"), Accessibility (anyone can create art or music without years of training), and Iterations (don't like it? regenerate — AI can make hundreds of versions in the time it takes a person to make one). Have pairs brainstorm one "impossible combination" prompt each (something that could never be photographed in real life) and share it out loud — a good way to make the "Ideas" strength land. Point out that "Accessibility" is a genuinely two-sided strength worth a beat of discussion at this age: it's wonderful that someone with no drawing training can now make a picture that matches what's in their head, but it also means the years of practice a trained artist put in are no longer the only path to a finished-looking image — that tension is exactly what's fueling real debates artists are having about generative AI today.

Scene 3 — Limitations ⚠️: This is where the lesson earns its weight, so slow the pace down. Hallucinations: "AI confidently states false facts sometimes. It doesn't actually know what's true — it predicts likely-sounding words, and those can be wrong words dressed up in a very confident tone." Copyright: "AI was trained on real artists' work, often without asking permission first. So who owns a picture the AI makes for you? Nobody has fully decided yet — even lawyers and governments are still figuring this one out." Deepfakes: "AI can create fake videos that make it look like a real person said or did something they never actually said or did. That's genuinely dangerous, because it can spread lies that look completely real." No Understanding: "AI generates patterns, not meaning. It can write a whole paragraph about love without feeling love — or feeling anything at all." Have students, in pairs, rank these four limitations from "most worrying to me" to "least worrying to me," and be ready for genuine disagreement — there's no wrong ranking, and the discussion of why they disagree is the point.

Once pairs have ranked the four, bring the class back together and poll which one landed at the top of the most pairs' lists. It's common at this age for "deepfakes" to win because it feels the most personal and scary, while "no understanding" gets ranked last because it feels the most abstract. Use that gap to make a bridge: "The reason 'no understanding' matters so much is that it's actually the ROOT of the other three. Because AI doesn't understand truth, it can hallucinate. Because it doesn't understand ownership, copyright gets messy. Because it doesn't understand a real person's consent, deepfakes are possible. One missing ingredient — real understanding — causes all three problems."

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with: "Generative AI is genuinely powerful and genuinely useful — but every single thing it makes is a remix of patterns from what it already learned, made without any real understanding of what any of it means. That's not a reason to dismiss it, but it is a reason to always check its work, and to always ask 'is this real?' before trusting a video or a fact it gives you."

Extension activity — Fact-Check the AI: If a teacher-driven AI text tool is available, ask it a question about a topic your class has studied recently (history, science, or Filipino culture works well) and read the answer aloud. As a class, fact-check the answer against a textbook or a trusted website, sentence by sentence, and mark anything that turns out to be wrong or made up. Discuss: "The AI said this so confidently — how would you have known it was wrong without checking?"

If a live AI tool isn't available or appropriate for your class, run the same activity using a short, printed AI-generated paragraph you've prepared in advance (write one yourself, or use one you generated before class), with two or three deliberately embedded false "facts" for students to catch. Either version stretches the 10–15 minute core lesson into a full period and gives students a concrete, memorable experience of hallucination rather than just a vocabulary word — and it builds a habit (always verify before trusting) that reappears throughout the rest of the AIQ curriculum.
