Builder mode students are old enough to have heard adults worry out loud about AI and jobs — from a parent's comment, the news, or social media — so this hook works best when it names the question directly instead of dancing around it.
Say: "Will AI take all our jobs? The real answer is more interesting than yes or no." Ask: "Has anyone here heard a grown-up say something like 'robots are going to take everyone's jobs'? What did they say?" Let two or three students share what they've picked up — this age group often repeats a half-remembered headline or a worried comment from home, and naming it out loud is more useful than pretending they haven't heard anything. Then say: "That fear isn't totally wrong, but it's not the whole story either. Some jobs change, some brand new jobs show up, and the skills that matter most might surprise you. Let's find out what's actually true."
A tip for this age band: resist correcting a student's worry too quickly. If a student says "my mom said AI is going to take her job," treat it as a real, valid concern worth exploring rather than something to immediately reassure away — the lesson itself is built to give them a more accurate and less scary answer by the end, so let the question sit for a moment before the activity starts answering it.
It also helps to acknowledge, honestly, that AI genuinely is changing some jobs right now — this isn't a lesson that pretends nothing is happening. The reassurance this lesson offers isn't "don't worry, nothing will change," it's "change isn't the same as disappearing, and there are real things you can do to be ready for it." Setting that expectation up front makes the rest of the lesson land as useful information rather than empty comfort.
This is also a good moment to preview the shape of the whole lesson in one sentence, so students know what to watch for: "We're going to look at jobs that changed, jobs that are brand new, and skills that matter more than ever — and by the end, you'll be able to explain the difference between a job disappearing and a job changing, which turns out to be a pretty big difference."
Builder mode moves through this lesson as three scenes of paired examples — the app pairs an "AI job" picture with a "not-AI job" picture in each scene, which is the exact structure to lean into for this age group: always ask "why does this one use AI and this one doesn't?" rather than just reading the facts aloud.
Scene 1 — Jobs Changing. Show the doctor and lawyer examples first. Say: "AI won't replace doctors — but doctors who use AI will replace doctors who don't! Same for lawyers: an AI can review 10,000 legal documents in minutes, but it still can't argue in court or comfort a client." Ask: "So is the doctor's job disappearing, or changing? What's the difference?" Then show teaching, the "not AI" example: "Teachers inspire, mentor, and build relationships — that's the human connection AI can't replace." Finally show design: "AI can generate design options in seconds, but a human still decides which one actually connects with people emotionally." Ask the class to spot the pattern across all four: "In every single one of these, is a computer doing the WHOLE job, or just PART of it?"
Scene 2 — New Jobs. This scene is the most fun to deliver with energy, since these are genuinely surprising jobs for this age group. Say: "Prompt engineer is a brand-new job — it's getting the best results from AI by crafting really good instructions, and some of these jobs pay very well." Then: "AI ethics officer — companies now hire people to make sure their AI is fair, safe, and doesn't harm anyone. Like a safety inspector, but for AI." Show plumber as the contrast: "Plumbers fix physical pipes in unique, weirdly-shaped old buildings — a robot can't easily handle that kind of variety and squeezing into tight spaces." Finish with: "AI trainer — humans teach AI by labeling data, correcting its mistakes, and giving it feedback. It's a real and growing field." Ask: "Ten years ago, none of these three AI jobs existed as job titles. What does that tell you about how fast this is changing?" The lesson mentions prompt engineering can pay very well — it's worth a note of realism here: like any job, pay varies enormously by company, experience, and location, so treat that as "this is a real, valued skill" rather than a guaranteed number for any specific person who learns it.
Scene 3 — Future Skills. Slow down here — this is the scene the quiz leans on most heavily. Say: "Creativity is the most AI-proof skill — coming up with truly new ideas, making unexpected connections, thinking differently." Then: "Empathy — understanding how others feel and responding with care — is something AI can simulate, but it doesn't actually experience." Then: "Adaptability — learning new things quickly and pivoting when the world changes — might be your #1 superpower for the future." Finish with the payoff idea: "And the single most in-demand future skill of all? Knowing how to work WITH AI as a partner, not against it."
After the three scenes, the app runs a short timed sorting game where students sort job-related tasks — prompt engineering, plumbing, AI ethics review, teaching kids, AI model training, creative thinking, AI collaboration, emotional support — into "uses AI" or "doesn't use AI" as fast as they can. Let students play this individually or in pairs; it works well as energetic competition against the clock rather than against each other, and it reinforces the exact sorting skill the three scenes just modeled.
Close the activity by returning to the hook question: "So — will AI take all our jobs?" Guide the class toward the lesson's real answer: "Not really — it changes what people spend their time doing, and it's creating brand-new jobs at the same time. The people who do best are the ones who learn to work WITH it."
Timing note: the three scenes plus the sorting game run about 8–10 minutes for a typical class working at their own pace on individual devices. Build in a couple of extra minutes if you pause to discuss each scene as a group rather than letting students click through silently.
A good way to deepen Scene 1 for this age group: after covering all four paired examples, draw a quick two-column chart on the board — "AI helps with part of the job" on one side, "still needs a real person" on the other — and fill it in together from what the class just saw (X-rays and legal documents on the AI side; comforting a client, mentoring a student, deciding which design feels right on the human side). Seeing it laid out visually helps this age group hold onto the idea that it's a split, not an all-or-nothing swap.
If your school runs opt-in squads or small groups for this age band, the sorting game pairs naturally with a quick squad challenge: have each small group race to agree on their sort before time runs out, then compare answers across squads and discuss any disagreements — a plumber's job, for instance, can spark good debate since parts of plumbing (diagnosing a leak from a description) are more pattern-based than others (physically working in a cramped, oddly-shaped space), so a "disagreement" here is a sign of good thinking, not a wrong answer.
This quiz's four questions map directly onto the three scenes plus the hook's central question, so if a student misses one, it's usually fastest to point them back to the matching scene rather than re-explaining from scratch. Read each question aloud before students answer on their own device, since a couple of the wrong options (especially on the last question) are written to sound almost right, and this age group benefits from hearing the sentence read with emphasis on the tricky part before deciding.
Close with: "AI won't simply replace jobs — it transforms them. The most valuable future skills aren't technical at all: they're creativity, empathy, adaptability, and knowing how to collaborate with AI. Use AI as a superpower, not a crutch, and not a threat."
Extension activity (15–20 minutes): In pairs or small squads, have students invent a brand-new job title that could exist ten years from now because of AI — similar to prompt engineer or AI ethics officer. Have each group write (or draw) a simple "job posting": the job title, three things the person does in a normal day, and one skill from Scene 3 (creativity, empathy, or adaptability) that the job especially depends on. Have a few groups present their invented job to the class.
A shorter alternative: have students interview a family member (in class or as a take-home question) with two simple questions — "has AI or a computer program changed anything about your job?" and "what's one part of your job you don't think a computer could ever do?" — then share answers as a class the next day. This connects the lesson's abstract "jobs are changing" idea to a real job a student already knows something about.
If time is short, a quick two-minute closer works well on its own: go around the room and have each student say one word for a skill they want to build up for the future — creativity, kindness, curiosity, patience — and write the words on the board as they go. Point out at the end how many of the words map onto the three future skills from Scene 3, even when students didn't use those exact terms.
