Start with a question, not a statement: "What happens when you combine AI with human creativity?" Write it on the board or say it and let a few hands go up with guesses before you continue. If your class has worked through the earlier lessons in World 6 on how AI models are trained and tested, remind them briefly: "We've talked about how AI learns from data — today we shift to what happens when that trained AI teams up with a real person's creativity."
Follow with the payoff line: "You get tools that help you create things you never could alone — let's explore the mashup!" Lean into the word "mashup" — this age responds well to the idea of combining two things to make something new, like a mashup of two songs or two game genres.
Quick poll to build engagement: "Who here has ever used an AI filter on a photo, or an AI tool in an app like Canva or a game? Raise your hand." Most will have, even if they didn't think of it as "AI" before. Point out: "You've actually already been doing a little bit of this mashup — today we're going to understand it properly."
To sharpen the warm-up further, ask one more question and let a short debate happen: "If a computer can now draw a picture, write a story, or make a song almost by itself — does that mean people don't need to be creative anymore?" Take two or three answers on each side without settling it yet. Tell the class: "Keep that question in your head — by the end of this lesson, you'll have a clear answer, and it might surprise you." This creates a hook that the rest of the lesson pays off, which helps sustain attention for this age group better than a straight lecture format.
Walk through the three learn scenes from the app as three connected mini-topics, planning roughly 10–12 minutes total. Use the badge for this lesson, "Mashup Master" 🎭, as a naming device — tell students they're working toward earning it, which gives the activity a light sense of progression across the three scenes rather than three disconnected topics.
Scene 1 — AI as Creative Partner 🤝. Go through each item and ask students to guess "AI-assisted or not?" before revealing:
• AI + Human Art — "The best AI art happens when humans GUIDE the AI. Your ideas + AI's execution = something new." Ask: "So who's actually creative here — you, or the AI?" Push for a real answer: the honest response is that the creativity is shared, but the person's idea is what makes the output specific and personal rather than random.
• AI + Musicians — musicians use AI to generate backing tracks, then add their own vocals and instruments on top. Ask if anyone can name a song or artist they think might use tools like this — it's increasingly common in pop and hip-hop production.
• Pure Human Art — a watercolor painting from imagination is 100% human, no algorithm involved. Emphasize this is just as valid as AI-assisted work, not a lesser option — some of the best creative work in the world still involves zero AI, and that's not going to change.
• AI + Writers — writers use AI to brainstorm ideas, then write the actual story themselves, using AI as a thinking partner rather than a ghostwriter. Compare this to brainstorming with a friend before writing an essay — the friend gives you ideas, but you're still the one who writes it.
Scene 2 — Creative Projects 🎭. Connect each example to something students may recognize: AI photo editors that remove backgrounds or change styles; AI animation tools that can animate a still drawing or generate character movement; photography, which stays fully human because composing a great photo takes a human eye for beauty, timing, and emotion that a machine doesn't have; and AI game makers, where a solo developer can now build art, levels, and music that used to require a whole team. For the game-making example especially, ask if any students play games and whether they can imagine what it would take to make one alone — most will realize how much work goes into art, levels, sound, and music, which makes the "one person, AI-assisted" idea land as genuinely impressive rather than an abstract fact.
Scene 3 — Human + AI Rules 📜. Present these as "the four rules of the mashup," and have students copy them into a notebook if you use one:
1️⃣ YOU Direct — always start with your own idea; AI is the tool, you're the director. Ask: "What happens if you skip this step and just ask AI to 'make something cool' with no idea of your own?" Most students will realize the result would be generic and wouldn't really reflect anything personal.
2️⃣ AI Executes — use AI for the tedious or technically hard parts, like background removal or generating variations. Ask for an example from a student's own experience — many will have seen a "magic eraser" or background-removal tool in a phone photo app without knowing it was AI-powered.
3️⃣ YOU Judge — your taste and standards decide what's good; AI generates options, you choose. Point out this step is easy to skip if you're in a hurry, but skipping it is exactly how low-quality "just generated it and posted it" AI content ends up online.
4️⃣ Credit Honestly — if AI helped make something, say so. Note that many platforms (art communities, some school assignments, contest rules) now explicitly ask creators to disclose AI use — this isn't just a classroom rule, it's becoming a real expectation in the wider world.
Close the activity by reading the lesson's summary aloud: "The best creative work combines human imagination with AI execution. The human provides ideas, direction, taste, and meaning — AI provides speed, variation, and technical capability. The key rule: YOU direct, AI executes, YOU judge the results." Circle back to the warm-up debate question here — "does AI mean people don't need to be creative anymore?" — and let students answer it again now that they've seen the four rules. Most will now say creativity is still essential, just applied differently: to directing and judging rather than to every single brushstroke or word.
Give students a minute of quiet thinking time before opening each question to the group — this age group often gives better answers with a moment to form a thought first, rather than being put on the spot immediately.
Close with: "Today you learned that AI and creativity aren't opposites — the mashup happens when a person with ideas teams up with a tool that's fast at execution. You're the director. Never forget that part."
Extension activity (15–20 minutes): Split students into small groups of three or four. Give each group one creative project idea (a comic strip, a short song, a game level, a class mascot design) and have them plan it out on paper using the four rules: what's the idea (Direct), which parts would they hand to an AI tool if they had one available (Execute), how would they judge if the result was good (Judge), and how would they credit AI's involvement if they used it (Credit). Groups present their plan in one minute each. No AI tool needs to actually be used — the point is practicing the thinking, not the technology.
To make the extension slightly more concrete, encourage students to make their four-rule plan specific rather than general — instead of "AI would help with the art," push for "AI would generate three background options for the comic strip's second panel, and we'd pick the one that best matches the mood of the joke." Specificity here is what separates a plan that shows real understanding of the "direct/execute/judge" framework from one that just repeats the vocabulary. If a group finishes early, have them swap plans with another group and try to spot one place where the "you judge" step is missing or vague — a useful peer-review habit that reinforces the lesson from a different angle.
