Teaching "AI + Creativity Mashup" to Explorer mode (ages 5–7)

Hook & Warm-Up

Gather the class somewhere they can see you and each other — a circle on the floor works well for this age. Hold up both your hands and wiggle your fingers before you start talking, like you're about to show them a trick. This lesson closes out the "building with AI" unit for this age band, so if your class has done earlier World 6 lessons, a quick callback helps: "Remember how we learned a computer helper needs LOTS of examples to learn things? Today we learn something different — how YOU and a helper can make things together!"

Say it slowly, with big energy: "A.I. and YOU make an AMAZING team! 🤝" Pause. Look around the circle. Then: "You have the ideas — all the fun, silly, wonderful ideas in your head. A.I. helps make them real. Together you can create art, music, and stories!"

Ask: "Raise your hand if you like to draw pictures!" Let hands go up, maybe pick two or three kids to say what they draw. Then: "What if a computer helper could help you draw EVEN MORE pictures, faster? Would that be cool?" They will almost certainly say yes loudly. Ride that energy into the activity.

You can widen the warm-up slightly by also asking, "Who likes to sing songs? Who likes to make up stories before bed?" — this plants the idea that today's lesson isn't only about drawing, since the app's examples span art, music, and stories. Keep each answer brief; the goal of the warm-up is energy and attention, not a full conversation.

Keep this part short — under two minutes. The goal is just to get them excited about "you + a helper" before showing them what that means.

A tip for this age group: avoid the word "AI" as a standalone term at first if your class hasn't heard it before — say "a helper" or "a computer helper" consistently through the warm-up, and only introduce "AI" as the grown-up name for that helper once they're already engaged with the idea. Five- and six-year-olds anchor much better to a friendly, concrete word than to an acronym, and the app's own Explorer-mode hook line leans on exactly this kind of warm, teammate framing rather than technical vocabulary.

Main Activity

At this age, skip technical explanations entirely. Use the app's picture cards and act everything out with your voice and body — this age group learns best through repetition, physical acting, and simple call-and-response, not through descriptions. Plan for about 8–10 minutes total for this section, with frequent movement breaks built in rather than long stretches of sitting and listening.

Step 1 — "You + A.I. Team" (🤝). Show the first group of cards on screen (or describe them if reading aloud): AI + Human Art, AI + Musicians, Pure Human Art, AI + Writers. For each one, act it out simply.
• AI + Human Art — say: "Imagine you draw a silly monster. Then a helper adds sparkly colors to it! You made the idea — the helper made it sparkly." Have a few kids describe what silly monster they'd draw.
• AI + Musicians — say: "A musician can ask a helper to make a beat — boom-boom-tss! — and then the musician sings their own song on top of it." Clap out a simple beat together.
• Pure Human Art — hold up an imaginary paintbrush and say: "But THIS painting — no helper at all! Just you and your imagination. Both are wonderful!" This is a good moment to reassure the class that drawing without any helper is just as special.
• AI + Writers — say: "A writer might ask a helper, 'give me three ideas for a story about a dragon,' and then the writer writes the WHOLE story themselves, using their favorite idea." Ask: "If you got three dragon ideas, which would you pick?"

Step 2 — "Making Things" (🎭). Move to the second group: AI Photo Editor, AI Animation, Photography, AI Game Maker. Keep it concrete and physical:
• AI Photo Editor — "A helper can take a photo and make the background disappear, like magic!" Mime a magician's wand.
• AI Animation — "A helper can make your drawing MOVE like a cartoon!" (flap your arms like you're animating a character walking).
• Photography — say: "But taking a beautiful photo — that's YOUR eyes, YOUR moment. A helper can't see what YOU see." Let a child mime taking a photo with their hands as a "camera," pointing it at a friend and saying "click!"
• AI Game Maker — "A helper can help draw all the pictures inside a video game, so even one person can build a whole game!" Ask: "What would your dream game look like?"

Step 3 — "The Rules" (📜). This is the heart of the lesson, so slow down here even if you're running a bit short on time elsewhere. Count on your fingers as you say each one, and have the class copy the finger-counting with you:
1️⃣ "YOU have the idea first!" (point to your head)
2️⃣ "The helper does the hard, boring parts!" (mime turning a crank)
3️⃣ "YOU decide if it's good!" (thumbs up or thumbs down)
4️⃣ "Always tell the truth about the helper!" (hand over heart)

End with the summary line in your own simple words: "The best creations happen when YOU have the ideas and the helper makes them real. You're the boss — the helper is your helper! And always be honest about using it."

If your class has a mascot they already know from the app (Pixel, for Explorer mode), you can weave it in here: "Pixel loves making art with a helper too — but Pixel always thinks of the idea first!" Familiar characters help this age group hold onto abstract rules like "you're the boss of the idea."

If a child asks a question you didn't expect — and at this age, they often will, sometimes wonderfully off-topic — a safe, honest, simple answer that fits every scenario is: "The helper is really good at doing things fast, but it needs YOUR idea first. It can't think of something new all by itself." This single sentence covers almost every version of "can the helper do X" a five- to seven-year-old is likely to ask, without requiring you to know technical details.

Discussion

Keep each question short, ask it to the whole circle, and accept any answer warmly — there are no wrong answers here, only chances to practice the idea out loud.

If a child gives a surprising or silly answer — and many will, especially to the first question — resist the urge to correct it toward a "better" answer. The point of this discussion isn't to test comprehension yet; it's to get the class practicing the idea that they are always the one with the idea, in their own words, however playful. You'll get a much clearer sense of whether the concept landed from the quiz walkthrough, which comes next.

Quiz Walkthrough

Younger students will take this quiz with a grown-up reading the questions aloud, so plan to walk through it together as a group rather than expecting independent reading. Read each question slowly, then read all the answer choices before asking for a raise of hands.

The best A.I. art happens when...
YOU have ideas and A.I. helps! — Say it like a cheer: the idea always starts with the child, and the helper just makes it happen. If a student picks "A.I. does everything," gently remind them: "But then whose picture is it? We want it to be YOUR picture!" You can also point out the option "A.I. copies things" is wrong because a helper isn't just tracing something that already exists — it's making something new based on YOUR idea.
When using A.I. to create, you should...
Be honest that A.I. helped! — Connect this to telling the truth in general, something this age already understands well. "It's like telling a friend who really helped you build your block tower — you'd say 'my friend helped me!' not pretend you built the whole tower alone."
In the team of you + A.I., who's the boss?
YOU are! — Reinforce with the finger-point-to-head gesture from the activity. The child is always in charge of the idea. If a child says "the computer" is the boss, gently correct with warmth: "The helper is smart, but it doesn't know what YOU want to make until you tell it. That makes you the boss!"
A.I. is best at the _____ parts.
Repeating and technical parts! — Use a simple example: "Like coloring in a HUGE picture — that takes a long time! A helper can do that fast so you can focus on the fun ideas." Contrast this with the wrong answers — a helper isn't especially good at the "fun" or "emotional" parts, because those come from what YOU care about, not from following a pattern.

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with: "You and a helper make an amazing team — but YOU are always the boss of the idea!" Give a class high-five or a group cheer to end on a happy note.

Extension activity (10–15 minutes): Hand out paper and crayons. Have each child draw a "helper monster" — a friendly imaginary creature that represents an AI helper. Then have them tell (not write) one sentence about what job they'd give their monster: "My monster would color in the sky for me!" or "My monster would help me draw fast cars!" Go around the circle and let each child share. This keeps the idea — humans direct, helpers assist — physical and personal rather than abstract, which is exactly how this age group retains a lesson.

If you have extra time, add a second round: after each child shares their monster's job, ask them one follow-up question — "And what part would YOU still do yourself?" This gently reinforces the "you direct, helper executes, you judge" structure without ever naming it in those words. A child who says "my monster colors the sky, but I draw all the animals" has grasped the entire lesson, even if they couldn't repeat the rule back to you word for word.

For a quieter alternative to sharing aloud with the whole circle, let children pair up and tell their monster's job to a partner instead — some children this age are more comfortable speaking to one friend than to the whole group, and the goal is participation, not performance.

If you'd like to display the drawings afterward, a simple bulletin board titled "My Helper Monster's Job" with each child's drawing and a one-line caption (written by you or an aide, from what the child told you) makes a nice visual reminder of the lesson that stays up for parents to see during a classroom visit — and it doubles as a gentle, age-appropriate way to show families what "learning about AI" actually looks like for this age group, which can otherwise sound intimidating to a parent unfamiliar with the topic.
