Teaching "AI in Creativity" to Builder mode (ages 8–10)

Hook & Warm-Up

Open with a quick show of hands: "Who here has seen an AI-made picture online, or a weird AI video, or heard about a computer writing a story?" Most students at this age have seen something — a filter, a game, a viral clip — even if they didn't know AI was behind it.

"AI can paint, compose music, write stories, and direct movies. Is it truly creative? Or just remixing?"

That's the lesson's own opening line — say it as a genuine, open question, not a rhetorical one, because the honest answer is that experts disagree.

Follow it with a concrete example to make it real:

"If I typed 'a cat riding a dragon in watercolor style' into an AI art tool, it could actually paint that for me in a few seconds — even though no one has ever painted that exact picture before. How does it know how to do that if it's never seen that exact scene?"

Let a few guesses land, then bridge to the answer: it has looked at an enormous number of existing paintings, photos, cats, and dragons, and learned the patterns that connect a description to a picture — so it can combine "cat," "dragon," and "watercolor" into something new, built entirely out of patterns it already knows.

Close the hook with the framing question for the whole lesson: "Is combining patterns you've already learned the same thing as being creative — or is real creativity something else? Let's look at three areas — art, music, and writing — and decide for ourselves."

Optional warm-up if you have a projector or printed examples: show one AI-generated image alongside one human-made image (a student drawing works fine) without labeling which is which, and ask the class to guess. This works well because AI art has gotten good enough that it's often genuinely hard to tell at a glance — which is itself a useful, slightly unsettling thing for 8- to 10-year-olds to experience before the lesson even starts.

Main Activity

The in-app lesson moves through three scenes — Visual Art, Music & Audio, and Writing & Film — each with four items to sort into "made by AI" or "made by a person." Walk through each scene's ideas before handing over devices, using real tool names so the lesson connects to things students may already recognize.

Scene 1 — Visual Art

Ask: "What do the three AI ones have in common that oil painting doesn't?" Guide toward: none of them require a physical hand, physical practice, or physical materials — they all happen by a computer processing patterns.

A good hands-on moment here: have a student describe a made-up scene out loud — "a jeepney flying through space," or "a carabao wearing sunglasses at the beach" — and explain that this is exactly the kind of text description these tools turn into an image. Ask: "How do you think it knows what a jeepney looks like, or what 'flying through space' should look like, if no one has ever actually painted that exact picture before?" Guide toward the idea that it has seen huge numbers of separate pictures of jeepneys, of space, and of flying, and combines those learned pieces into something new — even though the exact combination is new, none of the underlying pieces are.

Scene 2 — Music & Audio

Pause on voice cloning specifically — it's the item most likely to unsettle students in a useful way. Ask: "If a computer can copy someone's exact voice from just 3 seconds of them talking, what could go wrong if that were used without asking that person first?" Guide the discussion toward consent (using someone's voice without permission), identity theft, and scams — the same concerns the lesson names directly.

A good grounding example for this age: point out that AI Mastering — polishing a music track — is a good reminder that not every AI creative tool is about generating something brand new from a prompt. Some, like mastering, take something a person already made and improve it. Ask: "Is a computer helping polish a song a musician already wrote the same kind of thing as a computer writing a whole new song by itself? Why or why not?"

Scene 3 — Writing & Film

Ask students to think of their favorite book or story and explain, in a sentence or two, what makes it feel personal or meaningful to them — a character who feels like someone they know, an ending that surprised them, a joke only they would find funny. Then ask: "Could an AI writing tool make something meaningful to you in that same specific way, or would it be guessing at what's generally popular instead of what matters to you personally?" There's no need to force a single answer — the point is getting students to notice that "well-written" and "meaningful to a specific reader" aren't automatically the same thing.

Now hand out devices and let students work through all three scenes themselves. Circulate and ask, for each item, "why did you sort it that way?" — the reasoning matters more than getting it "right" on the first try.

Wrap the activity with the app's own summary line, read aloud: "AI creates art, music, and writing by learning patterns and recombining them. Powerful but the debate continues!" Ask students to raise their hand for "I think that counts as real creativity" or "I think that's an amazing remix, but not creativity" — there's no wrong side, and it sets up the discussion well.

Before moving on, connect all three scenes back to one shared pattern: every single AI item in this lesson — the paintings, the photo tools, the style transfer, the music, the mastering, the voice cloning, the writing, the video, the game design — works the same underlying way. It was trained on a huge pile of existing human-made examples, and it generates new output by combining patterns from that pile. That one idea explains all twelve AI items at once, which is worth saying explicitly so students see the pattern rather than twelve separate unrelated facts.

Discussion

These questions don't have single right answers — the goal is getting students to actually reason through the tradeoffs rather than just react with "AI is cool" or "AI is bad." Push gently for a "why" after each answer.

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with: "AI has gotten really good at making art, music, and stories by learning from huge amounts of human work and recombining it in new ways. That's genuinely impressive. But things like playing a real guitar, painting with a real brush, or writing from your own real life still need a human — and that debate about whether AI is 'truly' creative isn't settled yet. You get to keep thinking about it."

Extension activity: Run a short class debate. Split the class into two groups: one argues "recombining learned patterns counts as real creativity," the other argues "it doesn't — creativity requires something AI doesn't have." Give each side five minutes to gather points from the lesson (the three scenes are full of examples), then have each side present for two minutes. End by taking an anonymous class vote and discussing whether anyone changed their mind and why — the goal isn't a right answer, it's practicing forming and defending an opinion on a genuinely unresolved question.

If time allows, add a quick round after the vote: ask students to each name one job that involves being creative — a musician, an illustrator, a novelist, a game designer, a photographer — and discuss briefly, as a group, which part of that job an AI tool from today's lesson could help with, and which part they think would still need a real person. This keeps the debate connected to real careers rather than staying purely abstract.
