Teaching "AI in Creativity" to Explorer mode (ages 5–7)

Hook & Warm-Up

Gather everyone on the rug where they can all see you and, if you have one, a drawing or a printed picture nearby. This age group runs on your energy and your face more than your exact words, so make this playful and a little dramatic.

"Boys and girls, who likes to draw pictures? [Let a few hands go up, maybe ask what someone likes to draw.] Well, guess what — computers can draw pictures too now! And make up songs! And even tell stories!"

Hold up your drawing or picture, then say the app's own opening line for this age band, slowly and with big expression:

"A.I. can draw pictures, make music, and write stories! 🎨 But can it REALLY be creative? Or is it just REALLY good at copying? Let's find out!"

Pause on "REALLY good at copying" — say it like it's a fun mystery, not a scary word. This age band should come away curious, not worried that a computer is "better than them" at drawing.

Follow up with a simple, physical warm-up: ask everyone to close their eyes for five seconds and imagine their favorite animal doing something silly — a dog wearing a hat, a cat driving a car, anything. Then ask a few students to describe what they pictured out loud.

"See that? You just made a picture in your head, all by yourself, out of nothing! A computer can't close its eyes and imagine like that. It can only make pictures by mixing up LOTS of pictures it has already seen before. Today we're going to find out what a computer can do, and what only YOU can do."

That framing — "what the computer can do" versus "what only you can do" — is the whole lesson for this age, and it's worth repeating those exact words a few times through the lesson so it sticks.

One more quick warm-up if you have a couple of extra minutes before moving on: ask "has anyone ever seen a drawing or a song that a computer made?" Some students may mention a filter on a phone, a cartoon, or a game character. You don't need to explain the technology behind whatever they mention — just say "yes, that might be a computer helper too!" and use it to show that this isn't a made-up idea, it's something happening in the world around them already.

Main Activity

The in-app lesson for this age band moves through three scenes — Visual Art, Music & Audio, and Writing & Film — each showing things that are made by a computer and things that are made by a person, and asking "is this A.I., or not?" Walk through the same idea live, with your own simple examples, before handing over devices.

Scene 1 — Pictures

Show (or describe) a computer-made picture, like a painting of a cat riding a dragon.

"If I tell a computer 'draw me a cat riding a dragon, like a watercolor painting,' it can actually do it! It has looked at millions and millions of pictures before, so it knows what cats look like, what dragons look like, and what watercolor paintings look like — and it mixes all of that together into something new. That's the computer's picture."

Now hold up a real paintbrush, or point to a piece of your own artwork.

"But THIS — painting with a real paintbrush — a computer's 'hands' can't do. You have to squeeze the paint, mix the colors, and move your own arm just right. That takes real practice, and it comes from YOUR hand and YOUR ideas."

Expected response: kids miming brush strokes in the air, or holding up their own hands proudly. Ask "which one used a real hand with a real paintbrush?" — everyone should land on the human painting.

Scene 2 — Music

"Did you know a computer can even make up a whole song — the music AND the singing — just from you typing a few words about what kind of song you want? It learned how songs sound by listening to millions of songs first!"

Then mime strumming a guitar.

"But playing a real guitar? That needs real fingers pressing real strings, and a person practicing for a long, long time. A computer song-maker doesn't have fingers, and it's never practiced a single day in its life — it just learned patterns from other people's songs."

Ask two volunteers to act it out: one pretends to type on a computer and then sways to "invisible" music, the other mimes playing guitar with real effort and concentration on their face. This physical contrast helps make the idea stick for five- to seven-year-olds.

A nice follow-up: ask "if I hum you a little tune I made up right now — [hum three or four made-up notes] — where did that tune come from?" Let students guess. The answer is: it came from your own head, right at that moment, with no songs to copy from. Then say "a computer song-maker can only make a tune after listening to lots and lots of other songs first. It can't just hum something brand new out of nowhere the way I just did." This is a small, live demonstration of the exact difference the lesson is teaching.

Scene 3 — Stories

"A computer can even write a whole story, or make a moving picture — like a little movie — just from words you type! But it doesn't remember its own birthday, or its favorite food, or a time it felt scared or happy. A person writing a story uses real memories and real feelings, and that's something no computer has."

This is a good moment for a Filipino-classroom connection: ask "have you ever told Lola or Lolo a story about your day?" and point out that a real story from real life — even a small one, like what you had for merienda — is something only a person can tell, because only a person actually lived it.

This is also a good moment for a Filipino-classroom example: ask "has anyone here ever made up a bedtime story with Nanay or Tatay, just from your own imagination?" Point out that even a very short, silly made-up story — like one about a talking carabao — is something totally new that only came from that person's own head, and that's exactly the kind of thing a computer can't do on its own.

Now hand out devices and let students tap through the three scenes themselves. Circulate and ask "is this one made by a computer, or by a person?" as they go, pointing at whatever is on their screen.

Keep circling back to one simple test the whole lesson hangs on: "Did it come from real hands, real memories, or real feelings? Then a person made it. Did it come from mixing up lots of pictures, songs, or words it already saw? Then a computer made it." Say this often enough that students start saying pieces of it back to you.

If a few extra minutes remain before quiz time, play a quick standing game: call out things one at a time — "a picture a robot painted," "a song you made up in the shower," "a story a computer wrote," "a drawing you made with your own crayons" — and have students stand up if they think a computer made it, and stay seated if a person made it. Keep the pace quick and playful; the goal is repetition of the idea, not a perfect score.

Discussion

Keep this short and playful — five minutes of talking is plenty before attention drifts. Sit in a circle if you can, so it feels like sharing rather than a test. If a student says something like "but the computer picture was really pretty!" — agree with them! The goal of this lesson isn't to convince students that AI art is bad or ugly, only that it's made differently, and that the way a person makes things is special in its own way too.

There are no wrong answers here — the goal is getting students to say the ideas back in their own words, which is what makes it stick for a five- to seven-year-old far more than listening quietly does.

No — it remixes patterns 🧠 — not "yes," not "sometimes," and definitely not "only on Mondays" (that option is silly on purpose, and it's fine to let students laugh at it). This is the whole lesson in one line: imagining something brand-new from your own head is different from remixing things you've already seen.
Which needs human hands?
Playing guitar! 🎸 — not A.I. art, A.I. music, or A.I. writing. Playing a real instrument needs real fingers pressing real strings, which is something no computer can do — this connects straight back to the guitar-versus-song-maker moment in Scene 2.

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with something like: "Computers can make some pretty amazing pictures, songs, and stories now, by mixing up all the ones they've already seen. But YOU can imagine something brand new, right out of your own head, and YOU can paint with your own hands and tell stories from your own real life. Both are cool — but only one of them is really, truly yours."

If a student seems worried that a computer "does it better," reassure them gently: a computer being fast and impressive at mixing patterns doesn't take away what's special about a picture, song, or story that came from their own hands, memories, and feelings — those two things aren't actually competing with each other.

Extension activity: Turn this into a short "art show." Have each student draw their own quick picture of anything they like — take about five minutes. Then, as a class, look at a printed example of an AI-generated picture you brought in (or describe one in detail if you don't have a printout). Ask each student to share one thing about their own drawing that came from something they personally remember, felt, or imagined — a pet, a place, a feeling — and point out that the AI picture can't tell you a story like that about itself, because it doesn't have memories or feelings of its own.

If you have more time, add a second round: have each student "sell" their drawing to the class in one sentence, explaining what makes it special to them personally — this reinforces that the value of their art isn't just what it looks like, but the real story and real feeling behind it, which is exactly the part a computer-made picture can't have.
