Teaching "What's Next?" to Builder mode (ages 8–10)

Hook & Warm-Up

Builder mode students have just spent the previous two lessons designing their own AI rules and inventing their own AI concept — they've done real building work, not just reading. Open this lesson acknowledging that they've earned it.

Say: "You've completed AIQ! 🎉 You understand how AI works, how it's used, and how to build with it. The future is YOURS to shape." Give that a beat to sink in before moving on — this line is doing real work: it's telling them their learning wasn't passive, it was preparation for something they'll actually do.

Ask the warm-up question: "Out of everything we've learned in AIQ — how AI learns from data, how it sees and hears, generative AI, AI ethics, or your own AI invention from last lesson — what's the one idea that surprised you the most?" Take three or four answers. This both reviews the course and gives you a read on what stuck, which is useful for how you pace the rest of this lesson.

Follow with: "Today isn't a new topic. It's a chance to look back at everything you've built, and look forward at what YOU might do with it next."

If your class kept anything physical or digital from earlier lessons — the AI ethics rules they wrote in lesson 6.2.1, or the invention concept from 6.2.2 — it's worth having a few students briefly revisit theirs at the start of this lesson. Seeing their own earlier work again, right before being told "the future is yours to shape," makes the line feel like it's about something real they already did, not just an inspirational phrase aimed at the room in general.

Main Activity

Walk through the three scenes as a guided discussion, pausing after each item to connect it back to something specific from earlier in the course whenever you can — this age group responds well to seeing the "big picture" click into place.

Scene 1 — "What's Coming" 🔮. Present the AGI question directly: "Will AI ever really think like a human? This is a real, ongoing debate among the scientists who build these systems. Most say it's not happening anytime soon — but the debate itself pushes people to build better and better AI, trying to answer the question." Then AI + biology: "AI is starting to team up with biology — helping build brain-computer interfaces, and helping scientists design medicine that's personalized just for one person's body." Then, the imagination point — spend real time here: "The coolest AI idea hasn't been invented yet. Somebody your age, in a classroom just like this one, could be the person who invents it." Ask directly: "If you could invent any AI tool, what would it do?" and let a few students pitch an idea out loud. Close with the teamwork line: "The future isn't humans OR AI — it's humans AND AI, each doing what they're best at."

A good way to make the AGI question concrete for this age is to connect it to something they've likely used or seen: "You've probably talked to a chatbot or asked a voice assistant a question. That AI is really good at answering questions it's seen similar versions of before — but it doesn't actually understand what it's saying the way you understand what you're saying. That gap, between 'sounding smart' and 'actually understanding,' is exactly what the AGI question is asking about." This reuses ideas from earlier World 6 lessons on generative AI rather than introducing something brand new.

Scene 2 — "Keep Learning" 📚. This scene is meant to be genuinely useful, so name the resources specifically: "Code.org has free coding courses for any age — that's the foundation for actually building your own AI projects one day. Khan Academy has free math and science courses — the building blocks underneath how AI works. And Google's Teachable Machine and Scratch let you build a real, working AI project right now, for free, no coding experience needed." If time and internet access allow, this is a natural point to briefly show Teachable Machine on a shared screen — training a simple image classifier live (recognizing a thumbs-up versus a peace sign, for instance) makes "you can build one right now" concrete rather than abstract. End the scene with: "Read AI news, try new tools, ask questions, and never stop wondering 'what if?' — curiosity is your superpower."

Scene 3 — "Your Mission" 🚀. Frame this as the values scene: "In a world full of AI, your humanity — your creativity, empathy, curiosity, and wisdom — is your greatest strength, not something AI makes less important." Then the responsibility point: "'Build responsibly' means using AI to help people, protect privacy, fight bias, and make the world more fair — not less. That's a real choice builders make, not just a nice phrase." Then: "Share what you've learned — AI literacy is a superpower that should belong to everyone, not just people who happened to have access to a course like this." Close with: "You know things most adults don't. Use that to imagine and build a future that's better for everyone."

It's worth pausing on "fight bias" specifically, since Builder mode has already covered this concept in earlier World 6 lessons on fairness: "Remember when we learned that an AI is only as fair as the data it learns from? Building responsibly means actually checking your own AI project for that kind of unfairness, instead of just hoping it isn't there." Connecting this lesson's abstract "fight bias" line back to a concrete example students already worked through keeps the value from feeling like an empty slogan.

If a student asks whether AI will take their future job, give a real answer rather than a reassurance-only one: it's true that AI is changing which specific tasks people do in many jobs, and it's also true that the students in this room, by finishing this course, now understand AI well enough to be the people who work with it rather than being caught off guard by it — which is a genuine, practical advantage.

A related question worth raising if a student brings up jobs: whole jobs rarely disappear overnight because of a new technology, but the specific tasks inside a job often change a lot. A useful way to frame it for this age: "Think about how calculators changed math class — nobody stopped needing to understand math, but doing long division by hand became less important than knowing which calculation to run and whether the answer makes sense. AI is doing something similar to a lot of jobs — changing which parts a person does by hand versus with a tool."

It's worth closing the activity by tying all three scenes back together explicitly, since Builder mode students benefit from seeing the structure of what they just heard, not just the individual pieces: "So Scene 1 told us the future needs both AI and human creativity, Scene 2 gave us real ways to keep building that AI knowledge, and Scene 3 reminded us that how we build matters as much as what we build. That's basically everything AIQ has been teaching you, in three scenes."

Timing note: this runs about 18–20 minutes as a discussion-paced activity with a class of 20–25 students, including the Teachable Machine demo if you include it.

Quiz Walkthrough

This is the final quiz of the whole course — it's worth treating it as a genuine checkpoint on the big ideas rather than rushing through it. Unlike most AIQ quizzes, none of these questions test a specific fact from a single scene; each one checks whether a bigger idea from the whole 36-lesson journey has actually landed, so it's fine — even good — to pause after each question and ask a student to explain their reasoning rather than just confirming the letter or option they picked.

The future of AI is...
Humans AND AI working together. Tie this back to the "each doing what they're best at" idea from Scene 1 — AI is good at fast pattern-finding, humans are good at judgment, empathy, and deciding what's actually worth doing.
Your biggest advantage is...
Your humanity — creativity, empathy, curiosity. This is the single most important idea in the whole 36-lesson course. Make sure students hear it as a genuine strength, not a runner-up prize compared to what AI can do.
AI literacy should be...
For everyone. Connect this to the "share what you've learned" idea from Scene 3 — understanding AI shouldn't be limited to people who happened to have access to a course like AIQ.
What mindset should you bring to AI?
Understand it AND think for yourself. This is the practical meaning of "Learn AI. Think Human." — know how the tool works, but don't let it do your thinking for you.

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with: "You've finished all 36 lessons of AIQ. You understand how AI learns, how it sees and creates, why ethics matter, and how to build with it responsibly. That's real knowledge — now it's yours to use. Learn AI. Think Human. Go build something good."

Extension activity (20–25 minutes): Have each student write a short "letter to my future self" — one paragraph describing one thing they learned in AIQ that they want to remember, and one thing they want to try or build using AI in the next year. If your school has a way to actually hold onto these (a folder, a class time capsule, an end-of-year envelope), this becomes something genuinely meaningful to revisit later — but even without that, the act of writing it down helps the ideas stick beyond today's lesson. If time allows, invite a few volunteers to read their letter, or one line from it, aloud.

An alternative for a shorter session: have students pair up and each teach their partner one thing from AIQ that the partner doesn't remember clearly — the act of explaining something out loud is one of the best ways to confirm it's genuinely understood, and it revisits course content one last time in a way that's more active than a simple review.

A slightly bigger extension, if your school has time for it over the following week: have students actually try Google's Teachable Machine at home or in a computer lab session, training a small classifier of their own choosing (sorting fruit photos, recognizing hand gestures, whatever they're curious about) and writing two or three sentences about what surprised them. This turns the "Keep Learning" scene from something they heard about into something they actually did, which is a stronger note to end a 36-lesson course on than a discussion alone.
