Teaching "Your AI Invention" to Explorer mode (ages 5–7)

Hook & Warm-Up

This is the last lesson of AIQ for your Explorer class, and it should feel like a celebration, not another lesson. Gather everyone on the rug or in a circle where you can see every face. Bring a little extra energy today — you're about to tell them they're ready to be inventors.

"Boys and girls, remember ALL the things we've learned about A.I.? We learned how computers see pictures, how they listen to sounds, how they learn from lots and lots of examples, and how to be fair and kind when we use them. Guess what that means?"

Let a few guesses happen, then deliver the app's own line, big and proud:

"It's YOUR turn to be an A.I. inventor! 🚀 Think of a problem, design an A.I. to solve it, and present your invention! You've learned everything you need!"

Do a simple warm-up to get their brains into "problem-finding" mode. Ask: "Think of one thing that bugs you a little bit — something that's annoying, or hard, or that takes too long." Give examples to prime them: "Maybe it's hard to remember your library book. Maybe you always lose one shoe. Maybe you forget to water the plant."

"Turn to a partner and tell them ONE little problem you have. Doesn't have to be big — even a tiny annoying thing counts!"

Let pairs talk for thirty seconds, then call on two or three volunteers to share out loud. Write their problems on the board in simple words. This becomes today's raw material — every child is about to turn one of these small, real annoyances into an "invention."

Some children at this age freeze up when asked to "think of a problem" out of nowhere — it's an abstract request for a five- to seven-year-old. If a child says "I don't have any problems," don't push for a bigger answer; instead walk them through a short menu out loud: "Do you ever forget something? Do you ever lose something? Is there something you wish happened faster, or something you wish someone reminded you about?" Almost every child can answer yes to at least one of those, and any yes is enough to build on.

It also helps to remind the class, in one sentence, why they're allowed to feel proud today rather than nervous: "You've been learning about A.I. all year, a little bit at a time, and now you get to use ALL of it at once — that's what being an inventor means." This softens the size of the task; a capstone can otherwise feel intimidating even when the actual content is simple.

Main Activity

The app walks students through three simple stops — Choose Your Problem, Design Your Solution, and Present Your Invention. At this age, keep every stop short, spoken, and full of examples. You are not expecting a technical plan; you are expecting a child to point at a real thing that bugs them and say "an A.I. could maybe help with that."

Stop 1 — Choose Your Problem 💡

Tell the class there are four kinds of problems they can pick from, and give one silly, memorable example of each:

"You could pick a SCHOOL problem — like remembering your homework. You could pick a WORLD problem — like helping animals that need protecting. You could pick a HOME problem — like remembering to feed the fish. Or you could pick a problem that helps someone in your COMMUNITY, like your Lolo or Lola, or a neighbor."

Give each child a moment to circle or point to which of the four feels most exciting to them, using the small problem they shared in the warm-up as a starting point if it fits one of the four buckets. If a child's warm-up problem doesn't obviously fit one of the four, that's fine — help them see it does. "I always lose my slipper" can be a HOME problem just as easily as "helping animals" is a WORLD problem.

A second worked example helps children who are still unsure: "Let's think about a WORLD problem together. What if there's a beach with lots of trash on it, and the sea turtles get hurt? An A.I. helper could look at pictures from a camera on the beach and tell people 'come clean up over here, there's a lot of trash today!' That's a World problem an A.I. could help with." Point out that this is just one example — theirs doesn't need to look anything like it.

Stop 2 — Design Your Solution 📋

Simplify this to two questions only — do not introduce "data" or "AI techniques" by name at this age.

"First: who has this problem, and what happens because of it? Like — 'my little brother forgets to wash his hands, and then he gets sick.' Second: how could a helper — like a robot friend, or a computer — notice the problem and help? Like — 'it could remind him every time he comes inside!'"

Then ask the fairness question, kept as simple and concrete as possible:

"One more important question: would your idea be fair and nice to EVERYONE, or just some people? A good invention should be fair!"

Expected response: kids nodding, or saying things like "everyone should get a turn" or "it shouldn't leave anybody out." That's exactly the idea this question is meant to plant — you don't need a sophisticated answer, just the habit of asking it.

If a child struggles to answer the "how could a helper notice and help" question, give them a physical prop to imagine: hold up your phone and say "remember how a phone camera can 'see' things? Imagine it seeing your problem happen, and then it does something to help — what would that something be?" Grounding the idea in a device they already use daily (a phone, a tablet, a smart speaker at home) makes "A.I. helper" less abstract than the word "artificial intelligence" ever will.

Stop 3 — Present Your Invention 🎤

Hand out paper and crayons. Ask each child to draw their invention and be ready to tell a tiny story about it, using this frame:

"Draw a picture of your invention! Then get ready to tell us: who does it help, and how does it help them? Like — 'Meet my brother Ino. He forgets to wash his hands. My invention beeps and reminds him. Now he doesn't get sick as much!'"

Circulate while they draw, asking each child "who is this for, and what does it do for them?" so every child has practiced their two-sentence story before it's time to share. Give this stop the most time of the three — drawing takes longer than talking at this age, and rushing it undercuts the presentation step that follows.

When it's time to present, keep each turn short — thirty seconds per child is plenty, and trying to stretch it usually loses the room's attention. A simple routine works well: the child holds up their drawing, says their two sentences ("Meet ___. They have this problem. My invention helps by ___"), and the class gives a quiet round of finger-snaps or a thumbs-up instead of clapping, which keeps the transition between presenters fast and calm.

For a child who is shy about speaking in front of the whole group, offer an alternative: they can whisper their two sentences to you, and you say them out loud while they hold up the drawing, or they can present just to their table group instead of the full class. The goal of this stop is that every child practices connecting a helper to a person it helps — it doesn't require every child to be comfortable with public speaking on the same day.

Discussion

Keep this to a few minutes — the real thinking already happened during the drawing activity. This is mostly a chance for a few more voices to be heard before presentations, or a way to fill time if presentations run short.

Sharing your idea with others! 🎤 — not keeping it secret, hiding it, or being shy. An invention nobody hears about can't help anybody — the whole point of Stop 3 is working up the courage to show and tell.
The most important thing is...
Caring about the problem and the people! ❤️ — not using big words, having perfect code, or being famous. This is the whole lesson in one line: an invention drawn on paper by a seven-year-old who truly understands their brother's problem matters more than a fancy idea nobody feels connected to.

Wrap-Up & Extension

Close with something like: "Look at that — every single one of you is an A.I. inventor now! You found a real problem, you thought about how to help, you made sure it was fair, and you shared it with all of us. That's exactly what real inventors do, no matter how old they are." If your class earns in-app badges, this is also the natural moment to mention that finishing this lesson unlocks the "AI Inventor" badge — a nice, concrete reward to tie to the pride they should already be feeling.

Extension activity: Turn the classroom into a mini "Invention Museum." Tape every child's drawing up around the room, and let students walk around in pairs like museum visitors, pointing at each poster and asking the artist "who does this help?" This gives quieter students a lower-pressure way to share than presenting to the whole class at once, and it lets everyone see the full range of ideas the class came up with.

If you have extra time, add a second round: after the museum walk, gather back in a circle and ask each child to name one invention (not their own) that they'd want to actually use if it were real, and why. This gently teaches the idea of an "audience" — that inventions are for other people, and that other people get to decide whether an idea is genuinely useful to them, which is a small first taste of the same feedback loop real inventors and product designers rely on.
